Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is an action-adventure stealth video game developed by Kojima Productions and published by Konami exclusively for the PlayStation 3 console. It is the sixth Metal Gear game directed by Hideo Kojima and was released worldwide on June 12, 2008.

Set five years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, the story centers around a prematurely aged Solid Snake, now known as Old Snake, as he goes on one last mission to assassinate his nemesis Liquid Snake, who now inhabits the body of his former henchman Revolver Ocelot under the guise of Liquid Ocelot, before he takes control of the Sons of the Patriots, an A.I. system that controls the activities of PMCs worldwide.

Guns of the Patriots received universal acclaim, garnering perfect reviews and Game of the Year awards from several major gaming publications, including GameSpot, which claimed that the game was “technically flawless”.

Often considered to be one of the seventh generation of console gaming‘s most significant titles, its release caused a boost in sales of the PlayStation 3, where it sold over six million copies worldwide.

In the near future, the nations of the world rely on private military companies to fight their battles for them. When renegade super-soldier Liquid Ocelot emerges as the head of a potent coalition of mercenary powers, an ageing Solid Snake returns to save the world one last time.

MGS4 is set five years after the Big Shell incident (depicted in MGS2), in 2014. The world economy is based on continuous war, fueled by Private Military Companies, now comprising the majority of nations’ armies.

PMC unit members are injected with nanomachines to ensure only they can operate ID tagged weapons and to regulate their battle capacity. The control network created by these nanomachines is called Sons Of the Patriots. Liquid Ocelot is preparing to take control of the SOP system and launch an armed insurrection.

Snake accepts a request by Roy Campbell to terminate Liquid Ocelot. Otacon and Sunny, Olga Gurlukovich’s daughter, raised by the Patriots, are ready to provide support in any way, from the Nomad aircraft.
